Gauff is not like most people because she is talented with a racquet. Her accomplishments prove this. The 19-year-old from Florida did not do well at Wimbledon last month and was disappointed. But now she seems to be performing at her highest level again as the US Open approaches later this month.
Gauff won her fourth WTA Tour singles title in the Washington final by beating Maria Sakkari 6-2 6-3. Gauff is the youngest female champion of the hardcourt tournament in the nation’s capital. She is also the first teenager since Caroline Wozniacki in 2009 to win four WTA tournaments.
During the night, Dan Evans won the men’s championship at the age of 33. This made him the oldest champion since Jimmy Connors, who was 35 years old in 1988. Evans beat Tallon Griekspoor in the final with a score of 7-5 and 6-3. AP stands for Associated Press.
